A mobility tech company with the clear goal of revolutionizing the way vehicles are developed for the next phase of electric mobility are currently seeking a Lead Battery System Design Engineer to be responsible for the battery system design, electrical architecture, controls and overall battery requirements engineering.

The Lead Battery System Design Engineer will:

  • The Architect will drive major design decisions up to drive train and vehicle level
  • Understand and develop battery specific behaviours and requirements.
  • Optimise overall vehicle system including: The electrical battery architecture, controls design, fusing strategy, bussing and packaging concepts
  • The Architect will create an innovative, high performing, highly integrated (up to vehicle level), abuse tolerant and lightweight battery design. S/he
  • Develop battery system design optimised for solid state technologies.
  • Validate all key aspects of her/his architecture. This includes:
  • Designing appropriate test bucks and experiments,
  • Identifying suitable test resources (internal, VW Group and external)
  • specifying test set ups and instrumentation
  • Ensuring proper test execution, data acquisition and documentation
  • Establish battery design tools working with DevOPs team to implement an agile and intuitive tool landscape to support battery system design.
  • Work closely with cell design, modelling and safety experts in the battery team and interface with CAE, PD and test engineers across the company

The successful Lead Battery System Design Engineer will have:

  • MSc or PhD in Controls, System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Strong technical expert and thought leader with a minimum of 5 years of industry experience in automotive or aerospace battery design.
  • Expert in battery systems design and controls with deep understanding of battery performance characteristics, LV-HV controls
  • architecture, battery reliability
  • Experience in requirements engineering for BMS and controls
  • Strong background in battery control algorithms and state of X estimators
  • Broad knowledge of system design tools. Able and willing to build a tool landscape from scratch.
  • Good understanding of Functional Safety requirements and battery abuse behavior
  • Familiar with E/E architectures and com protocols and controls common in automotive applications (reliability, abuse, crash, etc.)
