The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) is a joint venture between the UK government and the automotive industry, established in 2013 to support the development and commercialisation of low-carbon propulsion technologies in the UK. The APC aims to make the UK a global leader in the design, development and manufacture of advanced propulsion systems, and to create economic and environmental benefits for the UK.
The APC operates through a series of funding competitions, which provide grants to collaborative projects that demonstrate the potential of innovative technologies to reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality.
The APC also provides access to world-class facilities, expertise and networks, and supports skills development and supply chain growth in the UK automotive sector.
The APC is part of the Automotive Council, a strategic partnership between the UK government and the automotive industry, which sets the long-term vision and roadmap for the sector.
The APC is also aligned with the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF), a government initiative to invest in research and innovation that addresses the major societal and industrial challenges of our time.
The APC’s vision is to position the UK as a centre of excellence for low-carbon propulsion development and production.
Their mission is to accelerate the industrialisation of technologies capable of propelling vehicles from initial concept to market ready products.
As of October 2023, the APC has supported over 150 projects, involving more than 450 organisations, with a total investment of over £1.5 billion. These projects are expected to save over 270 million tonnes of CO2 by 2032, equivalent to the lifetime emissions of 10 million cars. They are also expected to create or safeguard over 50,000 jobs in the UK automotive sector.
Some of the successful projects supported by the APC include:
Advanced Propulsion Centre UK Ltd, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL
The APC is headquartered at the University of Warwick, where it operates a state-of-the-art hub facility that provides a collaborative space for innovation and knowledge exchange. The hub also hosts the National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC), a world-class research and development centre for advanced propulsion systems.
The APC also has four regional spoke facilities across the UK, each focusing on a specific area of expertise:
