About Advanced Electric Machines (AEM)

Founded in March 2017 as a spinout from Newcastle University's Centre for Advanced Electrical Drives, Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) designs and manufactures electric motors and powertrain systems that eliminate rare-earth magnets and copper windings, without compromising on performance.

Co-founded by Dr James Widmer and Dr Andy Steven, AEM has grown from a university research team into a manufacturer with global partners across multiple industry sectors. 



What is it like to work there?

AEM is an engineering-led team built around solving one of the automotive industry's biggest hidden problems: its dependence on rare earth materials. Since spinning out of Newcastle University, the team has moved from research prototypes to real production volume, protecting its work along the way with over 40 international patents. It's a fast-moving environment for engineers who want to work on technology that's already proven in the real world, from setting a world record for an electric aircraft flight to powering Bentley's e-axle systems.


Technology and USP

AEM's motors eliminate both rare-earth magnets and copper windings, addressing a dependency the company has likened to the semiconductor shortage that crippled global car production during COVID. The HDRM range covers commercial and off-highway applications, while SSRD delivers ultra-high performance for passenger cars, both matching the performance of traditional permanent magnet motors while using more sustainable, recyclable materials. Customers report up to a 12% increase in vehicle range from AEM's patented efficiency-boost technology.
